National Train Day Celebration ( All Day )
Saturday, May 11th is National Train Day - Register by May 6
This year will feature a free ride on Amtrak's Vermonter to Bellows Falls, a return train on board historic Green Mountain Railroad equipment to White River Junction where a ceremony will be held, hosted by Secretary of Transportation Brian Searles. Buses will be available after the ceremony back home. A seperate celebration is being held at Brattleboro.
This year's event is a celebration of the new higher speeds of the Amtrak Vermonter, now increased by the completion of ARRA funded infrastructure improvements -- welded rail, track and signal improvements that have raised the top speed to 79 mph and made the trip 28 minutes shorter.
Passengers who make reservations by May 6th (see below) can take a free ride on Amtrak's Vermonter leaving at it's new regular times of 8:48 am at St. Albans, 9:25 am at Essex Junction, 10:01 am at Montpelier Junction, 10:30 am at Randolph, 11:12 am at White River Junction going as far as Bellows Falls at 11:48 am. After a brief stretch, music and lunch pick-up, passengers will be taken on the Vermont Rail System White River Flyer back north to White River Junction.
The White River Flyer will arrive back north at White River Junction station at 1:30 pm. A ceremony will begin at the train station (102 Railroad Row) including presentations by the railroads and state and elected officials, all of whom make the service possible. After the ceremony there will be an opportuity to view historic displays of railroading in New England and other railroad displays.
Following all activities at approximately 2:45-3:00 pm passengers with reservations (see below) will board motor coaches to return to their station of embarkation. Those who wish can stay and reserve a return on the northbound Vermonter at 6:22 pm for $12 ($6 for children).
